From trucking startup to capital murder allegations…..

When Auburn Police announced the arrest of 28-year-old Harold Rashad Dabney III of Montgomery on charges of capital murder in the killing of Auburn University professor Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, many in the community began asking the same question: Who is he?

Public records begin to trace a picture of a man whose life, in the past two years, intersected with law enforcement more than once.

In December 2023, Dabney was apparently booked in Virginia Beach County, Virginia, on a weapons charge for possession of a sawed-off shotgun. He was 26 at the time. WRBL has reached out to the arresting agency for additional details.

Less than a year later, in September 2024, Dabney turned up in Alabama business filings as the organizer of Excellent Carriage LLC, a trucking company registered at an address on Narrow Lane Road in Montgomery. The company listed a broad business scope — everything from general freight and household goods to farm supplies and chemicals.

Records show the business applied for a federal USDOT number a month later, in October 2024, and reported one truck and two drivers. While the company’s status was marked “active” with the U.S. Department of Transportation, it never obtained the required operating authority to haul freight for hire across state lines. In practice, the business appeared to exist more on paper than on the road.

Fast forward to September 6, 2025, when police say Dabney fatally stabbed Dr. Schnuelle as she walked her dog at Kiesel Park. Investigators say he then stole her red Ford F-150 pickup truck and drove away. The following morning, a call about a suspicious person on Beehive Road led police directly to Dabney. By 8:30 a.m. September 7, he was in custody, later charged with two counts of capital murder and booked into the Lee County Jail without bond.
